#stopshoutingstartpraying

Turn on the television, open the newspaper, read social media, get fired up and argue. Recently, it seems, that is what we do. Our world, our nation, and even our little community appear divided. The reason is valid, and the issues that divide us are critical.
What we are doing now, protesting, reading, and posting on social media, is not ending the division. Shouting at one another is not convincing people to come over to your side anyway.
In reality, most people listen to the news source that already represents their positions. People follow the social media websites that reinforce their views. Protestors shout across barricades at one another, and rarely, if ever, do they cross to the other side.
Unless people on both sides of the issue move to where they can listen to the other, the division will not end.
Jesus said, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,” (Matthew 5:44, NIV).
Jesus tells us to love people and to pray for them regardless of their viewpoints.
What if we did what Jesus said? Wouldn’t that make a difference? Give it a try, and see what impact that would make. I am asking everyone to take a step toward making a positive impact on division by doing what Jesus said in three ways.
First, pray for the most distant. Pray for a person or a people group who are farthest from you. Pray for people that you can’t even see from where you are standing. Pray that the Lord will show you their struggles, pray that the Lord will show you how he loves them, and pray that the Lord will help you to love them.
Second, pray for those near you. Pray for your neighbors, relatives, and friends. Do something generous for your neighbor, then ask them, “How can I pray for you?” As you hear their requests, really listen to them. Present their needs to the Lord, and pray that the Lord will help you understand their struggles.
Third, pray for people who cross your path each day. God has placed those people in your life for a reason, perhaps to pray for them. Pray for your mechanics, mail carriers, food servers, clerks, and anyone you come in contact with on a daily basis. Ask them what their needs are and pray for them.
Today, let’s start a movement: stop shouting, start praying (#stopshoutingstartpraying). Stop shouting, listen, and start praying for what you hear. Stop shouting across the divide, and start praying for the common needs of others, and the next time you see a social media post you disagree with, don’t respond by shouting; start praying.
God doesn’t call us to defend him, but he does call us to glorify him.
Jesus said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, NIV)

Village Schools of the Bible

PalsTragedy is all around us.

What do we say and do to help people struck down through unimaginable disaster like the Las Vegas shootings or the hurricane devastation in Puerto Rico? As Christians we respond with compassion and prayer, but inside we ask ‘what would we do in that kind of situation?’

Gordy and Nancy’s daughter Kathryne and son-in-law Jamison Pals had a heart for lost people, and sold everything they had to put the world decisively behind them, to go to a difficult mission field in Japan where less than 3% of the population know Christ. On the eve of their departure for Japan, Jamison, Kathryne and their three children were tragically killed in a vehicle accident.

How to Weather Tragedy

On Tuesday 3rd October, Gordy and Nancy Engel shared with us their encounter with this unimaginable tragedy. It is impossible in a blog post to do…
